Local SEO for small businesses: start here

A plain-English guide to local SEO for small businesses: your Google Business Profile, consistent information, reviews and location pages that genuinely help.

If customers find you by searching for what you do near where they are, local SEO is likely your most valuable channel. The basics are within reach of any small business.

Start with your Google Business Profile

Claim and verify your profile, then complete it properly: the right primary category, services, opening hours, a clear description and good photographs of your premises or work.

Keep it current. Out-of-date hours or a closed-down phone number cost you customers before they ever reach your website.

Keep your information consistent

Your business name, address and phone number should read the same on your website, your profile and any directories you appear in. Inconsistencies create doubt for both customers and search engines.

Make your website say where you work

State the places you serve in plain language on your service pages, and make your contact details easy to find. If you serve several towns, a page for each is only worthwhile when you have something distinct to say about it.

Ask for reviews, and answer them

Happy customers are usually glad to leave a review if you ask simply and make it easy. Respond to every review, including critical ones, politely and specifically.

Never buy reviews or write your own. It breaches platform rules and customers can usually tell.

Measure what matters

Track calls, direction requests and enquiries rather than only clicks. These are the actions that become customers.
